It’s been over a decade since we first launched WPackagist, and what started as a side project to scratch our own itch has grown into something we never quite anticipated: a service used by thousands of WordPress developers every day.

Today, we’re announcing that WPackagist is moving to a new home with WP Engine.

Why now?

As a worker-owned cooperative, we’ve always tried to be thoughtful about where we put our energy. WPackagist has been a labour of love, but maintaining critical infrastructure for thousands of developers isn’t something we can do justice to alongside our client work and other commitments.

WP Engine felt like the right fit. They already steward tools like Local, ACF, and the Delicious Brains plugins, products that developers rely on daily. WPackagist slots naturally into that family.

What this means for users

Nothing changes. WPackagist will continue to work exactly as it always has. Same URL, same functionality, same free access. WP Engine has committed to maintaining it as a free service for the community.

If anything, the service will be in better hands, with dedicated resources and infrastructure that we simply couldn’t provide as a small cooperative juggling many priorities.

A thank you

We want to thank everyone who has used WPackagist over the years, reported issues, contributed to the codebase, or simply spread the word. Open source thrives because of communities like this one.

We’re proud of what we built, and we’re glad it will continue to serve WordPress developers for years to come.

Here’s to the next chapter.
